Pizza Online
The first person to have purchased a pizza online has been lost in history, much of the early efforts in online ordering happened in the area of San Francisco, the hot bed of the computer industry in the 1990's.
With the Internet and the World Wide Web were the playgrounds of academics and computer geeks alike, pizza was the food that fuelled the computer revolution.
Pizza's popularity with the college crowd, along with the delivery aspect of the business, meant that it was only natural that online pizza ordering would be one of the first commercial applications of the new technology.
Comparing it to today's system, the original technology was equivalent to two cans and a piece of string.
Then the internet exploded and using a personal computer to order became accessible and easy. Operators saw that people ordering online spent anywhere between 5 and 20 percent more than if they had called the order into the store.
One Pizza restaurant discovered that their online orders averaged at $28, nearly 40% higher than call in orders. Abandoned orders or where customers are not in when the order was delivered was decreased when the order was placed online.
Papa John's has taken this online selling one step further, giving customers the opportunity to place orders from 24 hours to 21 days in advance. The company researched and found the majority of people liked to order in the morning or shortly after the arrive at work, to take care of their meal planning for the day.
These days, there are tons of pizza outlets that have ordering services online. But as time progress other food joints have also adapted the fad of online food ordering system. Even top restaurants and upscale dining have also found methods in adapting to the fast paced cyberworld.
